The incident occurred in Fairfield County around 1:15 a.m., Wednesday, March 6 in Greenwich.
According to Connecticut State Police, a trooper was parked on the right shoulder of I-95 southbound near Exit 3 in Greenwich for a traffic stop when a Toyota Tacoma passed their cruiser at an excessive rate of speed and failed to move over.
After completing the prior traffic stop, the trooper followed the Toyota and clocked the vehicle traveling at speeds more than 100 mph in the posted 55 mph zone and erratically swerving across the travel lanes before exiting the highway at Exit 2 in Greenwich, state police said.
The trooper initiated a stop and positively identified the operator of the Toyota as Edwin Garcia-Castillo, age 28, of Stamford.
While speaking with Garcia-Castillo, the trooper said that Garcia-Castillo's eyes appeared to be bloodshot and also detected the strong odor of alcoholic beverages emanating from within the vehicle, state police said.
State Police said when asked, Garcia-Castillo initially denied consuming alcoholic beverages but later admitted that he had consumed alcoholic beverages before driving.
Garcia-Castillo was asked and agreed to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, which were not performed to standard.
He was arrested and charged with:
- Operating under the influence
- Reckless driving
- Failure to slow or move over for an emergency vehicle
Garcia-Castillo was later released on a $1,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled for arraignment at Stamford Superior Court, on Wednesday, March 27.
